Rolex and the Oscars

Very few brands have such a sonorous name as Rolex. Undoubtedly the brand is a true status symbol, even people who have never dealt with the watch industry, know that behind the name Rolex are hidden expensive watches. Just know that there are tricks for saving money.

Discrete is probably not a word associated with Rolex. The models from Rolex are anything but inconspicuous. Over the years, models from the Swiss watch company have been used deliberately in films. Well-known Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, Orlando Bloom, Robert Downey Jr. or Paul Newman all wear and wore various models of the brand.

Whether the usage of timepieces in films are intended to complement the character of the protagonist or for product placement reasons is almost irrelevant. The fact is that Daytona, Submariner and Co. are doing well, and if they fit in with the story, then the plot is elevated.

The company is known for promoting exceptional people and organisations. People whose unique achievements challenge the world. As part of this, Rolex also supports the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, even better known as the name of the organisation being the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars for short. The non-profit organisation honours the excellence of film history preservation, with Rolex taking on the role of main sponsor in 2017.

Martin Scorsese

Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese grew up in New York in the 1950s. Because of his asthma, he spent months in the hospital, but this was retrospectively crucial to his career. Bored from doing nothing all the time, he discovered writing. So he wrote first screenplays and storyboards. He made his first films in the late 1960s, with film classics such as "Mean Streets" (1973), "Taxi Driver" (1976), or "Good Fellas" (1990), he opened the public to new perspectives. He reversed the usual ideas of cinema and showed new possibilities with his mixture of skill, charisma and generosity.

For his masterpiece "Raging Bull" (1980) Scorsese received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. For his following films he was nominated not infrequently, but he finally received his first Oscar as best director in 2006 for "The Departed". He loves films, loves cinema. Films show who you are because they tell something about yourself and reflect society at a certain time. For Martin Scorsese, details in the film play a significant role, so it comes as no surprise that in many of his works Rolex wristwatches make an appearance. For Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, a certain preference can not be denied when watching attentively, after all, he also wears it himself in 18-carat white gold with the President Bracelet (Ref. 228239).

Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow is also an Oscar-winning film director. Born and raised in California, she moved to New York in the 1970s, where she studied film at Columbia University. Her preference for topics with the potential to trigger social change redefined the current film landscape. She insists on her principle of visual storytelling and is often simultaneously a producer and scriptwriter of her own films. After her master’s degree in New York, she started filmmaking, and in 1981 she was both a co-author and co-director on her debut film "The Loveless".

In the 1990s she shot the action film trilogy "Blue Steel", "Point Break" and "Strange Days", all three were written and produced by Rolex brand ambassador James Cameron. In the films, Bigelow questions the conventions of the typical action film, which the audience received well – it was celebrated for the skilfully placed, visual aesthetics. With her subsequent works, Kathryn Bigelow manifested her point in Hollywood, underlining her authority, with both "Deadly Commando – The Hurt Locker" (2008) and "Zero Dark Thirty" (2012) receiving Oscar nominations. For the former, the directress won an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director, leaving her the first and only woman ever to win an Academy Award for Best Director. She said in an interview: "I believe that people can learn from each other and change, and I believe that cinema can promote this change. The goal of art is to make oneself strong for change."

She confirms this statement in her latest film "Detroit". It deals with racist riots and racial violence in the US around 1967. Her films often reflect current politics, and events depicted can often be understood as a commentary on society – and define it. For Kathryn Bigelow, the cinema is a journalistic experience. It shows things that we did not know yet, expanding our own consciousness and the horizon. She wears a Rolex Date 34 (Ref. 115200) in stainless steel with a domed bezel and a small cyclops lens at three o’clock to enlarge the date window.

Alejandro Gonzales Iñárritu

Another really remarkable director is Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu. The native Mexican is also a successful producer and scriptwriter and, along with two others, the only director to win an Oscar at two consecutive Academy Awards. But more on that later.

Iñárritu grew up near Mexico City as the son of a wealthy banker. But when his father went bankrupt, Alejandro had to accept some privations as a child. At the age of 17, he first crossed the Atlantic on a cargo ship to Europe, at the age of 19 years again – but first staying in Africa. Experiencing such adventures at a young age can be credited as sources of inspiration for his artistic work. He studied drama and later directing, worked as a moderator and director of the Mexican radio station WFM. Through intensive engagement with and in various areas of the professional world and through his keen perception, he collected stories that he eventually housed in his first feature film.

In 2000, "Amores Perros" hit the cinemas, his first feature film hit: It has won over 35 international festival and critics awards, including the Golden Globe Awards and Oscars. In addition, the film won eleven Ariel Awards, the Mexican counterpart to the Oscars. In all of his subsequent films, Iñárritu’s expression becomes clear. The observation of human behaviour and his visual style established him as a filmmaker of whom we probably have not yet seen the last movie. Other works such as "21 Grams" (2003), "Babel" (2006) and "Biutiful" (2010) received numerous Oscar nominations and prizes of international format. With "Birdman" (2014), he created yet another masterpiece, with nine Oscar nominations, four of which won best director, best film and the best original script, speaks for itself.

With his latest film to date, "The Revenant" (2015) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Alejandro G. Iñárritu won another Academy Award. He is the third director in film history to win an Academy Award for Best Director two years in a row. But DiCaprio finally wins with this movie with his first, long-awaited Oscar as best actor. Overall, the film was nominated twelve times for an Oscar. The amount of prizes and awards Iñárritu has won with only six feature films is truly overwhelming. No wonder that he is actively promoted by Rolex. Alejandro is seen on set with his Rolex Sky-Dweller (Ref. 326933) in 42 mm stainless steel and yellow gold. Thanks to a rotating disc, the model displays two time zones simultaneously.

James Cameron

James Cameron is probably the most famous film director Hollywood has ever seen. As a director, scriptwriter and producer, he created some of the most memorable movies. These include the Terminator films (1984 and 1991), Alien (1986), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). Cameron’s films are known for their epoch-making visual effects; for „Avatar,“ for example, more than two years of technological development were needed to perfect the fusion of computer animation and real-life scenes. But all the work and the immense budget for the production of the film paid off, to this day "Avatar" is the most successful film in history, just before "Titanic". Both films brought in over $1.8 billion. The film "Titanic" has been nominated for an Academy Award 14 times and won eleven of them, both record numbers. Three of the Oscars went straight to James Cameron, for Best Picture, Editing and Best Director.

James Cameron made the following quote: "Making a timeless film requires a willingness to take risks. You have to discover something new. Whoever plays it safe will be forgotten." He always proves that he is true to this motto. Because since 1969 he is also a passionate diver, having spent more than 125 days in total underwater. To unite his passions of film and diving, he shot the movie „The Abyss“ in 1989, setting new standards for lighting and shooting underwater. His fascination for the deep sea finally drew him to the wreck of the Titanic, the film that emerged as a result is well known to everyone.

Cameron has long been a Rolex Deepsea wearer (ref 126660) to match his hobby. In the filming of „Titanic“ he had actor Bill Paxton wear a Rolex Submariner, because as Cameron correctly says, big films depend on details. A Rolex is not only a beautiful watch, but incredibly resistant – so he wanted to subconsciously tell the audience that the figure can withstand the pressure as well as said watch.

Four award-winning directors, one brand

All four directors appeared in this year’s Rolex movie. In it, they gave various statements about their work, for example, Martin Scorsese said that they make films with the aim of touching people of all generations. Kathryn Bigelow also believes that films should generally work beyond the screen. They should touch us, widen our horizons. If that succeeds, a movie has the potential to become a timeless classic. A similar opinion is shared by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, according to him a good film connects cultures and transcends borders. Scorsese sees James Cameron as a visionary. Even though we do not understand the meaning of the word, Cameron is someone who shows us the way, he thinks one step ahead and never stops. According to Iñárritu, Martin Scorsese himself is undoubtedly one of the great cinema legends, with his art skills going far beyond his films. Kathryn is also a wonderful director, having en eye for human well-being and expressing perfectly herself in her film production.

James Cameron puts it in a nutshell: all four have very different styles and approaches. They are all interested in different topics, but share a passion for excellence, the excellence of their actors and, with a smile on their faces, a passion for Rolex watches – something we share with them.
