Features of the Omega Speedmaster Day-Date
Watches from the Speedmaster Day-Date series are considered a perfect alternative for those who prefer models without manual winding. From 1993 to 1999, Omega used the calibre 1150, which was updated to the calibre 1151 in 1999. Since 2007, the Speedmaster has provided a power reserve of up to 44 hours with a
self-winding chronograph movement known as the
Omega 3606 calibre. The movement, as with the previous calibres, was developed on the basis of the infamous Valjoux 7751.
Now let’s come on to the eponymous
function the Speedmaster Day-Date: the days of the month circle the dial and are indicated by the dial’s own
half crescent hand. The
day of the week and month are displayed by a separate totaliser at 12 o'clock. In addition, the Day-Date also offers a day-night indication, tachymeter and a chronograph with a second, 30-minute and 12-hour display.
The case is very distinctive, but not overwhelming with a diameter of 40 mm and a depth of 15 mm. With its size the
Omega Moonwatch Day-Date thus represents a
more subtle alternative for watch lovers that might think the 42 mm case diameter of the Moonwatch Professional is too large. The Moonwatch Day-Date is also water-resistant up to 100 metres, which is adequate for most day-to-day tasks. In contrast to the classic Moonwatch, the case back is not screwed but pressure-closed instead. The dial is also protected with the now commonly used sapphire crystal instead of the Hesalite one used for the Moonwatch. To suit every taste, the case is available in polished or matte-finished stainless steel or in yellow and red gold. Depending on the model, you can also choose between stainless steel, leather or gold for the bracelet.

To the moon and back: the Moonwatch is living history
Originally designed as a racing driver's watch, people mainly think of the
Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch when they think of the Speedmaster series, which has a hand-wound Lemania movement and no date display. As the name suggests, it was this exact model that was worn by Buzz Aldrin when he set foot on the moon. Since then, the series has developed in every conceivable fashion and has been constantly expanding, to the point where the
Speedmaster Day-Date now offers a
version with date display.
The Speedmaster Day-Date through the ages
After it was introduced in 1993, the
Speedmaster Day-Date endured several updates and changed both its calibre and model reference number. Over the last few years, however, it has reinvented as a highly trendy watch and an affordable alternative to the Professional Moonwatch. Since 2007, the Speedmaster Day-Date has been produced with the
new calibre 3606.This calibre is more precise and more accurate than that of the Speedmaster Reduced, Omega's other current entry-level model in the Speedmaster collection. Another advantage of the new calibre is that it does not require the service and repair of problems that the calibre 1141 experienced.
