Home above the clouds: a cosmopolitan is conquering the market
With its presentation at Baselworld 2012, the Sky-Dweller represents the latest innovation of the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Rolex. It impresses with its convincing technical sophistication. It was able to claim 14 patents with the series. Despite its many functions, it remains easy to use and appeals frequent flyers, especially due to its second time zone.
Surprising was the presentation of a completely new Rolex model in 2012: After the company in the previous years usually only presented variations of already existing models, hardly anyone expected a new watch. But the Sky-Dweller has it all, a masterpiece of technology that provides travelers with the information they need to quickly get familiar in the new time zone.
The distinguishing features of the Rolex Sky-Dweller
The Rolex Sky-Dweller
could also be considered the little brother of the GMT-Master II. But much more exclusive and absolutely noble. Until 2017, the model was only available in white, yellow or rose gold
. Today you can also buy it in Oyster-Steel
, Rolex' further development of conventional stainless steel. With a diameter of 42 mm, the case is not overly large, but it is also not too small.
A striking feature is the so-called Ring Command bezel
, which also reproduces the fluted appearance haptically. However, it also has a function that is as sophisticated as it is simple: it is used to control the individual complications of the Sky-Dweller and then set them via the winding crown. Turning the bezel counterclockwise to the first position allows the date to be set. If you turn to position two or three, you can make adjustments to the local or reference time.
This brings us to the display of the second time zone in the lower part of the Sky-Dweller dial. A 24-hour display, placed off-centre, enables the wearer to read the preset reference time at any time thanks to a fixed red triangle. Since the indication covers 24 hours, it is ensured that there is no confusion between morning and afternoon.
However, the highlight of the Rolex Sky-Dweller
is the annual calendar
. This distinguishes between months with 30 and 31 days, which is why a correction of the date is only necessary once a year, on 1 March. But one looks in vain for a window to display the current month: instead, depending on the month, the end of the line indices are highlighted in a contrasting colour. The twelve months are assigned to the indices from one to twelve in natural order. For example, if it is Valentine's Day, February 14, you will read the number 14 in the date window. On the other hand, the field at two o'clock appears in a clearly different colour - for February, the second month of the calendar year.
The Rolex Sky-Dweller is powered by the specially developed calibre 9001
with a self-winding mechanism. It is, without doubt, one of the most complex movements ever produced by Rolex. The movement alone holds seven patents and is, of course, COSC-certified. It ensures that the movement and case work together perfectly. Thanks to its intricate construction, manufacturing and integrated innovations, it guarantees the highest precision and reliability.

Famous wearers of the Rolex Sky-Dweller
The Rolex Sky-Dweller convinces with easy handling despite sophisticated complications. True to the motto, "Simplicity is the highest level of perfection", Rolex created this timepiece. It is not only frequent flyers, whether at work or at home, who are attracted by this model - the watch is also very popular in the world of stars and starlets. NBA superstar LeBron James
, for example, is seen time and again with his all-gold Sky-Dweller
, as is basketball player Andre Iguodala
. Apparently, professional sportsmen and women, in particular, cast their eyes on the Sky-Dweller: Julio Jones, an American football great and UFC champion Conor McGregor

Other exciting Rolex series at a glance
Since its launch, many Rolex watches have become true icons. Both fans and collectors alike admire the Swiss luxury watches, because not only visually the watches from Rolex make a great impression. Technically, too, the company stands for the highest precision and has quality standards like no other brand. The style of all models can be aptly and elegantly summed up, which is why Rolex made visually only minor changes to their models in the past 50 years. Some of the most popular models today are known far beyond expert circles and are considered absolute classics:
- The most famous model, the Submariner. Its unmistakable style has been imitated countless times but was never surpassed. It is undoubtedly the most popular watch model of all time - extremely versatile and appealing.
- The Daytona is considered the iconic model of the manufacturer. The watch has been always produced in limited numbers, which is why the waiting list is always above average. Similarly, the prices on the second-hand market - the demand is bigger than the supply. That is why the Daytona is considered the model with the safest value retention and the highest collectors value.
- The GMT-Master was developed together with Pan American Airways. The company needed a watch for its pilots that could display at least two time zones. With its striking two-tone bezel, the GMT Master quickly became popular beyond this audience, and is today seen on the wrist of countless actors, musicians and even astronauts.
- Rolex launched a true stereotype of the wristwatch with the Datejust. It is classic, elegant and clean. The date is at this handcrafted Rolex at three o'clock and it is equipped with the Rolex typical magnifying glass. It was already launched in 1945, but even today it is still in great demand.
- Not to mention the Milgauss, introduced in 1956, with the unmistakable second hand in the form of a lightning bolt. With a diameter of 40 mm, which is also suitable for strong wrists, and the reliable anti-magnetic 3131 Caliber, this model quickly became a favourite among doctors and scientists.
